My Thought Regarding First Lecture I Had About Abnormal Psychology

When I started studying psychology in graduation (B.A), we study about Abnormal Psychology and in abnormal psychology we tried to understand abnormal behavior. The question which first comes to my mind was that how will we know that what is the difference between normal and abnormal behavior. The reason behind this question was that in our daily life we accused so many people of being abnormal and always calls ourselves normal people. Our professor taught us about the abnormal behaviors but they also tells us that there is no final definition with which we can say that this man is abnormal and that man is not. They taught us many ways of knowing which abnormal behavior is but if we ask that what is abnormal behavior the answer was not satisfying to me. The bigger problem was that I build a fear in myself that if I complete my MSC in Psychology and became a doctor then i will not be able to say that I know for sure that who is abnormal and who is normal.

Now when I started studying MSC Psychology From MAO College and 2 days ago I received a lecture from Dr Shabbir Ahmad Rana on abnormal psychology. Our professor was giving us an introduction of abnormal psychology. At that time a student asks the question which was in my mind for a long time, and I am also thankful to my class fellow that he asked this question. He asked that is there is no satisfying criterion on describing the difference between normal and abnormal behavior? Our professor replied to him by giving an example, they told a story that in the past their car started slowing down and there was also a strange sound coming out of it, so they take their car to a mechanic and tells him that their car is slowing down. The mechanic asked him that is the car also making a sound? Our teacher said that I was very amazed by hearing that and I asked the mechanic that how he knows that the car is also making a sound. The mechanic replied that it’s his work that why he know it. So our professor said to us that

"If we psychologist are not able to know for sure that what is abnormal behavior then who will?"

And with these words i was rescued and I now believe that when I will study this subject (Abnormal Psychology) I will be able to tell the difference between abnormal and normal behavior. This was the first time I had no doubt in my mind about this subject and I am thankful to my professor for that. Now the most exciting this is that I will be studying Abnormal Psychology under Dr Shabbir Ahmad Rana and I think it will just be like diving into the sea of knowledge about psychology. That is the power of a professor that his little examples short lines can change a thought process in the student and give hope and courage to a student.
